Inktober 2016

I want to talk about inktober.
It is a lovely yearly artistic event that consists in the idea of making (at least) one drawing a day, with ink, during the month of October. This will be my third inktober year, and I'm so excited! It is my favourite art event, because it has saved me.

Well you see, I was a puddle of apathy. But I'll get to it in a sec.

These are the arts I made back in 2014 and 2015, respectively.

And finally, this year's:

I first heard about inktober back in 2012 and although I wanted to participate real badly, I was in such a bad place - both emotional and physically speaking - that I couldn't bring myself to do anything after a long period of being sick. That really sucked!

I was unproductive so I felt like shit. I felt like shit, so I didn't feel like doing anything.

In the following year, I almost convinced myself to do it, but I felt like it was SO overwhelming! Finishing one drawing everyday?? Impossible!
I lacked the discipline, I didn't study art or any form of drawing, would only draw perhaps once a week and would take AGES to finish a single piece. Yeahhh, those were dark times.

But I promissed myself I would do it next year. And I kept my word on it!
It felt INSANELY rewarding the more I did it, I found my lost passion about drawing and doing art in general and that's when I bought my first sketchbook: I loved how my drawings built up throughout that month, I WAS HOOKED.
I felt so accomplished, it didn't matter if my drawings looked like crap, I had made it! There were days when I had no idea of what to draw, there were days I didn't have much leisure time to work on art, and I felt so proud of myself for going through that month of drawing everyday.

It wasn't (and still isn't) about the outcome, whether those drawings were looking nice or not.
You're a hero if you're drawing everyday.
That's why I love inktober. <3 p="">

Progress - Cancer

Showing a bit of my creative process :)
Music lyrics and books are my favourite source of inspiration as I enjoy creating a story for my drawings; they help me create an environment, a meaning, a direction. I believe that feelings and empathy are very important, not only for me as an artist, but for the viewer as well.
So for this one drawing, I used a quote by Haruki Murakami, that says:
Possibilities are like cancer. The more I think about them, the more they multiply, and there is no way to stop them. I'm out of control. (Dance, Dance, Dance)
I roughly sketched and started with some watercolor stains all over, very intuitively to be honest, safe for her pink cheeks (I love pink cheeks! ahaha). I always draw/ paint these on my regular Canson sketchbook, nothing fancy, no watercolor paper.

Drawing with friends always helps! At this point, I started inking with a cheap blue ink that I love.

Closer up

End~.

Tim Burton's expo

Yesterday (29/03), I was at the Museum of Image and Sound of São Paulo for Tim Burton's expo. It was actually my third visit to the expo and I simply adore his original artworks. I don't consider myself a big fan of Tim's, but I fell in love with everything being showcased, from his earliest works to the compositions, his ideas, play with words and concepts. Really worth the long lines, in my opinion. They don't allow pictures of the expo itself, but I made sure to draw lots each visit!

The entrance

My first visit was on February 16th, here are some pics: (it gets better, I promisse!)

Montauk Gull

Progress shots of watercolor study, reference used was a painting by Tom Hedderick :)
I used my Canson One sketchbook for this painting, A4 size.
I really like this sketchbook for paintings, it handles watercolor and ink very well although it's very different from painting on a 100% cotton paper, it's much better than other cellulose papers I've tried that claim to be made for watercolor (like Montval).

New Sketchbook!

I have bought a Fabriano sketchbook a couple of weeks ago :)
It's A5 size, its binding is beautiful! It was super affordable and I appreciate the landscape format.
I'm not too fond of its pages though, the paper can't handle fountain pens, it holds ink okay with a brush though. I'm somewhat disappointed with the paper's quality to be honest.
Watercolor is a big no, even a tgin layer is staining the back of the page, but I'll keep using this sketchbook till the end!
I'm a sketchbook lover ❤
